The Spring Color Wheel:Explained, Then Split Into Four Seasons
By Nora Vance, Colour Analyst. 11 minute read.
Search “spring color wheel” and you’ll find a rainbow, a list of pastels, or a chart of three seasons. Few show how Spring actually works.
This page maps the Spring colour wheel by hue, value and chroma, connects the four Springs, and gives each its own wheel. Tap the fan to read a hue’s hex.
This fan holds the 12 hues of the Spring wheel. Tap a blade to copy its hex.
Four things to picture first, one per Spring: cherry blossom for Light, a daffodil for True, a split apricot for Warm and a crocus for Bright. Each chip is a wheel hue that Spring leans on.
What is the spring color wheel?
The spring color wheel is a map of the clear, warm hues that make up the Spring season in seasonal colour analysis, plus the four Spring types that sit around it.
Spring is one of four seasons in the Sci/ART 16-season framework. It has four sub-seasons: Light, True, Warm and Bright Spring.
A standard artist’s wheel shows hue only. A seasonal wheel adds value (light or deep) and chroma (clear or muted), then tilts the whole thing warm.
This wheel shows the 12 hues Spring draws from. The solid outer arc marks core hues. The dashed arc marks stretch hues, which are Spring only in clear, warm-leaning forms. Tap a wedge to copy its hex.
Clockwise from the top: lime, daffodil, marigold, papaya, coral, watermelon, orchid, crocus, periwinkle, aqua, jade and apple green. Full hex lists live on the Spring color palette hex codes page.
How to read the spring color wheel: hue, value and chroma
Munsell’s system describes any colour by three things: hue, value and chroma. Spring sits in a specific zone on each. The outlined box on every strip shows where.
Hue: warm
Spring leans warm. Even its blues and pinks carry a touch of yellow.
Value: light to medium
Spring skips the deep end. Navy appears only as a bright or warm navy.
Chroma: clear
No grey is mixed in. This is the line between Spring and Autumn.
Place all three together and you get Spring: warm, light-to-medium and clear. Zones are practitioner placements, not measurements.
The Spring season color wheel: how the four Springs connect
The four Springs form a flow, not four boxes. True Spring sits in the centre. Each other Spring leans toward a neighbouring season.
This diagram shows each Spring and the season it leans toward. Light leans to Summer, Warm to Autumn, Bright to Winter.
In practice, many people sit between two Springs. Treat your type as a centre of gravity, not a fence. Kettlewell’s “leaning” idea is the clearest way I know to say it.
Light Spring color wheel
These bars place Light Spring against the other Springs. They are practitioner placements, not measurements.
The Light Spring color wheel is the palest Spring wheel: warm-neutral hues with plenty of white in them.
Think cherry blossom, just opening. Soft peach, blossom pink, butter and mint sit here. Colour feels airy, never heavy.
Light Spring leans toward Summer. It is lighter and softer than the other Springs, yet it stays warm. That warmth is the line between Light Spring and Light Summer.
Leans toward Summer. Often mistaken for Light Summer. Wheel edge: the pastel side. See the Light Spring color palette or its Light Spring hair color ideas.
True Spring color wheel
These bars place True Spring against the other Springs. They are practitioner placements, not measurements.
The True Spring color wheel is the balanced centre of Spring: warm, light, clear and medium in contrast.
Picture a daffodil in full sun. Yellow, apricot, coral, apple green and clear blues all sit near the middle of the wheel.
No edge pulls True Spring away, so it wears the widest span of the Spring wheel. In 12-season systems this palette is often called Warm Spring. This site keeps the two apart.
Leans toward no neighbour. Often mistaken for Warm Spring. Wheel edge: the middle. See the Warm Spring (True Spring) palette.
Warm Spring color wheel
These bars place Warm Spring against the other Springs. They are practitioner placements, not measurements.
The Warm Spring color wheel is the golden side of Spring: warm hues with a toasted, honeyed edge.
Think of a ripe apricot, split open. Honey, papaya, geranium red, leaf green and warm camel gather here.
Warm Spring leans toward Autumn. Its colours run richer and more yellow than True Spring, but they stay clear. Dusty or muddy versions belong to the Autumn wheel.
Leans toward Autumn. Often mistaken for Warm Autumn. Wheel edge: the golden side. See the Warm Spring (True Spring) palette or Warm Spring vs. Warm Autumn.
Bright Spring color wheel
These bars place Bright Spring against the other Springs. They are practitioner placements, not measurements.
The Bright Spring color wheel is the clearest Spring wheel: saturated, high-contrast hues on a neutral-warm base.
Picture crocus purple beside a poppy and a clear turquoise stream. Hues snap against each other. Pairings flash instead of blend.
Bright Spring leans toward Winter. It keeps a warm edge, but clarity leads. Chroma matters more than warmth here, so muted tones drop away fast.
Leans toward Winter. Often mistaken for Bright Winter. Wheel edge: the clearest side. See the Bright Spring (Clear Spring) color palette or Bright Spring vs. Bright Winter.
Spring colour chart: the four Springs side by side
This chart lines up the four Springs on the same traits. Use it to spot your nearest match, then read that wheel above.
| Spring | Leans toward | Warmth | Lightness | Clarity | Contrast | Often mistaken for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light Spring | Summer | Warm-neutral | Light | Clear, delicate | Low | Light Summer |
| True Spring | None (centre) | Warm | Light-medium | Clear | Medium | Warm Spring |
| Warm Spring | Autumn | Warmest, golden | Medium | Clear, toasted | Medium | Warm Autumn |
| Bright Spring | Winter | Neutral-leaning warm | Medium | Clearest | Highest | Bright Winter |
Spring wheel vs the Summer, Autumn and Winter wheels
Each neighbouring wheel shares one trait with Spring and differs on another. These three lines name the split.
- Spring vs Summer. Both light. Spring is warm, Summer is cool. Spring vs. Summer color differences.
- Spring vs Autumn. Both warm. Spring stays clear, Autumn goes muted. Spring vs. Autumn complete comparison.
- Spring vs Winter. Both clear. Spring runs warm, Winter runs cool. Spring vs. Winter palette breakdown.
How the Spring wheel works across skin depths
Skin depth changes how much contrast a colour makes. The wheel stays the same; the wedge that looks best shifts. LRV, light reflectance value, is how much light a colour bounces back.
- Fair to light skin. Light and True Spring wedges sit close to the skin’s lightness, so the effect is soft. Very bright wedges can overpower.
- Medium, olive or golden skin. True and Warm Spring wedges echo golden undertones. Very pale tints can look chalky.
- Deeper skin with warm or red-gold undertones. Higher-chroma wedges, such as coral, turquoise and tomato red, keep their contrast. Pale pastels can fade, so go clearer.
How to use the Spring wheel: do and don’t
This set pairs each habit worth keeping with the habit that sends people to the wrong wedge.
Your Spring drape kit and wheel card
These four swatches show why you keep the weave constant. In practice, a knit and a poplin in the same colour read differently, so change one variable at a time.
This checklist gathers the kit for a home drape, one test piece per Spring. Tick as you go; your progress stays on this device.

A few things people ask me
What is the spring color wheel?
The spring color wheel maps the clear, warm hues of the Spring season by hue, value and chroma. It also shows the four Spring types, Light, True, Warm and Bright, and how each leans toward a neighbouring season.
What colors are on the spring color wheel?
The wheel runs from lime and daffodil through marigold, papaya and coral, then pink, orchid and crocus, and back through periwinkle, aqua, jade and apple green. Core hues are warm; blues and violets appear only in clear, warm-leaning forms.
How many spring color seasons are there?
In the Sci/ART 16-season framework there are four: Light, True, Warm and Bright Spring. Many 12-season systems list three, folding True and Warm Spring into one palette.
What is the difference between True Spring and Warm Spring on the wheel?
True Spring sits in the centre: balanced warmth, lightness and clarity. Warm Spring sits half a step toward Autumn, so its hues are richer, more golden and more toasted, while staying clear rather than dusty.
How do I know which spring color wheel is mine?
Drape clear colours near your face in daylight. If pastels lift you, try Light Spring. Balanced brights suggest True Spring, golden tones Warm Spring, and vivid high-contrast colours Bright Spring. A professional drape confirms it.
Is the spring color wheel warm or cool?
Warm-leaning throughout. True and Warm Spring are clearly warm, Light Spring is warm-neutral and Bright Spring is neutral-leaning warm. None of the Spring wheels are cool, and none contain dusty greys.
How is a seasonal wheel different from an artist’s color wheel?
An artist’s wheel shows hue only. A seasonal wheel adds value, how light or deep a colour is, and chroma, how clear or muted it is, then tilts the whole wheel warm or cool.
Test one wedge at a time, in daylight, against a plain white card. The colour that evens your skin and wakes your eyes tells you which wheel is yours.
